Did You Notice the Kintsugi Bowl in Beyoncé's "Sandcastles" Video?

Posted by Robin Lieberman on

Beyoncé's Lemonade album is a unique creation that not only showcases her artistry but also delves deeply into themes of love, betrayal, forgiveness, and redemption. One of the album's visual moving moments is the music video for "Sandcastles," where Beyoncé lays bare some serious vulnerability.

Before the song begins, the camera pans onto a kintsugi bowl, serving as a subtle yet potent symbol to encapsulate her journey in marriage.

In the ancient Japanese art of kintsugi, instead of discarding broken pottery, the artist glues the pieces together with gold. In "Sandcastles," Beyoncé lays bare her pain and forgiveness, offering a reflection on the complexities of love and the strength found in rebuilding fractured relationships.

"Show me your scars and I won't walk away"

The kintsugi bowl serves as a tangible metaphor for Beyoncé's forgiveness of her husband, Jay-Z, and her willingness to embrace the imperfections and scars that come with love and life. This shows that while relationships may endure cracks and fractures, they can emerge stronger and more beautiful through the process of repair and renewal.

The kintsugi bowl emerges as more than just a prop—it's a profound symbol enriching the album's narrative. Signifying resilience, transformation, and the enduring power of love, it encapsulates the journey of not only overcoming adversity, but thriving from it. Maybe the way we hold ourselves and the way our partners hold us, during a betrayal, says more about the power of our relationship than the cracks that occurred as a result of the mistake.

Have you even experienced a betrayal in a relationship that although initially painful, through loving communication and the willingness to forgive, eventually brought you closer together?
